lots of tripping and inspiration in this episode! Thanks for being patient guys, this week was crammed with every type of graduation possible, so I wasn’t able to watch this until this morning.
You can watch Pleasantly Surprised on Dramafever here:
After Kai Qi pushes Ah Jie out the door, she fans herself, muttering that nothing happened. If that makes you feel better honey… Xiao Yi tells her that he has a class assignment to travel somewhere new and bring back something special from there. Kai Qi being Kai Qi, starts to thing about places around Taipei that are known for special dishes. HA. Xiao Yi starts pouting however, asking if they can go somewhere new outside of Taipei. Kai Qi rebukes him, saying that riding a moped out of Taipei is very expensive, and that it’s just a simple class assignment.
When the two head outside, Xiao Yi hides behind Ah Jie. He complains that Kai Qi won’t take him to the beach, and Ah Jie immediately volunteers to drive them, since Kai Qi treated him to oden last time. Kai Qi looks dubious, but accepts it.
Meanwhile, Le Xuan grabs an omelette for her mysterious brother, and heads over to his apartment for a visit. He’s not home, but she sees a photo in a manga book with “Luffy and Chopper forever!” It’s a reference to the popular manga One Piece, and Le Xuan gasps in surprise when she turns the photo over and sees Kai Qi with her brother.
Said brother is busy working out, and I know this isn’t relevant but MAN he is buff. We see a memory flashback of when he and Kai Qi had been friends in university/high school. He’d lend her manga books, and she’d give him lunch boxes to try and critique. It’s obvious that his was a one sided crush, and he must have spoken about her to Le Xuan, because she shows up at the gym to moan about how his “Chopper” turned out to be Kai Qi and not the femme fatal she was imagining.
At the coast, Xiao Yi thanks Kai Qi for bringing him, and tells her that his mom (her sister) had promised that one day they’d look for hermit crabs together. Aw. The trio start to dig around for hermit crabs, and Kai Qi cuts her finger on a rock when she finds one. Ah Jie moves to wrap it, but notes that Kai Qi is acting weird around him. She trips while trying to deny it, and Ah Jie catches her in typical dramaland fashion.
The group move to another location to take photos with the wind turbines for Xiao Yi to bring back, and at first Kai Qi tries to stay out of the photo. Ah Jie forces her to scoot in, and keeps telling her to smile. When some tourists pass by, he takes the opportunity to take a photo with them, and puts an arm around his “wife” when the tourists ask them to get closer together.
While they’re exploring the island, Kai Qi sees a couple fooling around – the girl is calling the guy a pervert, and he’s tickling her while lying on top. Xiao Yi lets the cat out of the bag when he squeals that uncle Ah Jie and Kai Qi did the same thing last night. The two had tripped again (this time Ah Jie tripped because of his panic) onto the sofa for another bumper car kiss. Kai Qi had called him a pervert and tried to get him off, but he’d just feverishly mumbled that everything was better when she was around, and held on tight.
Le Xuan is on a rampage today, and looks up Enzo for confirmation that Ah Jie is Louis. She wonders why he’d want to work at her restaurant, and Enzo lets slip that it’s because Ah Jie has a childhood friend working there. Le Xuan connects the dots, and you can literally see the gears turning in her head.
The next morning, Kai Qi looks awful, and although she drinks a glass of vitamin c, she passes out and collapses on the ground. A panicked Xiao Yi runs outside in search of Ah Jie, but runs into Le Xuan’s brother Hao Wei. He immediately rushes in and takes them to the hospital. It’s very apparent through the way he sits and interacts with Xiao Yi that there’s a big disparity between him and Ah Jie. We enter another flashback scene, this time showing the end of Kai Qi and Hao Wei’s friendship. He’d put a sign up on the door saying that Kai Qi was prohibited from entering the club room, and called her selfish and rotten when he saw her in person. Ouch.
Kai Qi was over exerting herself, and her hospital stay is fairly short. Hao Wei ends up giving her a ride home since she doesn’t have money on her, and Ah Jie sees them walking in the parking lot. He receives a call from Le Xuan at that moment though, saying she had new about Kai Qi. Although he tries to play it cool at the bar, Le Xuan reveals she knows everything. She threatens to tell Kai Qi, but Ah Jie shrugs it off, saying that he’s leaving Taiwan in a month anyways. When Le Xuan tries to leave, she gets pulled aside by a drunk acquaintance, and manhandled into staying. Ah Jie helps her out, and it seems like she’s starting to fall for him a bit, or at least look upon him more favourably. I’m hoping the latter…
Kai Qi brings Ah Jie into the restaurant early the next day for training. She wants to start from the basics, because from what she’s seen, he’s got great knife skills and plating skills. His issue with the chicken must have been from not understanding the ingredients well. As they’re working, Kai Qi’s friend reveals that the dish for the competition is a Sole Meuniére – a simple breaded fish dish. Kai Qi isn’t happy about that, because it means that it’ll be hard to have something to stand out with.
Ah Jie decides to nudge her towards some inspiration by taking her on a walk through the Taipei Botanical Garden (I’m in love with Kai Qi’s poncho). He awkwardly tries to make comparisons with plants in the garden, such as a majestic cucumber with a tiny yellow flower, and it’s only until they reach the lotus ponds that Kai Qi starts to appreciate the contrast between the beautiful fragile flowers and the earthy green background.
The botanical garden stays on her mind all night, and she ends up with a flash of inspiration – a gradient of sauces that contrast the sole. She happily tells Ah Jie the next day, even remarking that working with someone else isn’t bad after all. When he teasingly asks her to repeat herself, she grumps and walks off. Ah Jie stops her however, by reminding her that she took his car to work, so they’ll have to ride back together. 🙂 All throughout this conversation, Le Xuan is hidden behind a tree watching. Cut it out already.
Ah Jie finishes changing, and then peaks his head out to check if Kai Qi is outside. When he doesn’t see her, he relaxes and starts to walk out….when Kai Qi yells at him from the other side. HAHAHA. He throws up the curtain in panic, but she brushes past him to start changing. Gangster comes up and sees Ah Jie bending down by the curtain to pick up a punch card that Kai Qi dropped, and starts chasing him around. The two are startled when Kai Qi yells at them to cut it out, and trip so that they almost kiss. HAHAHAHAHAHA. They both glance up to see Kai Qi still in her tank top, and cover each other’s eyes to ensure no one saw anything. Kai Qi, of course, tells them to stop making a big deal out of it.
More foods pics! Kai Qi has decided to make a variety of sauces that are different sweetnesses, and even feeds Ah Jie a bit of the strawberry sauce in an effort to get another opinion. Le Xuan stops by to observe, and Ah Jie makes a shushing motion at her.
I’m really tired of the tripping/catching trope already, mostly because it’s waaaayyyy over used in Fall in Love with Me and I think drama writers can be much more creative than that. I’m happy with the character development we’ve seen with Kai Qi however, and how she’s matured with Xiao Yi. Here’s to hoping that the competition works out, and that there aren’t any secrets that tear our characters apart.
