Taiwanese Movies Summer/Fall 2016

Hey Guys!

I’ve seen a lot of advertising lately in the subway for Taiwanese movies. Some have been more heavily promoted than others, but they definitely seem to be a different style than the typical TW drama rom-com. Today I’m going to be sharing two of the more heavily marketed ones I’ve seen.

3The first is called Happy Dorm, it’s about a guys dorm that has no wifi or library, so they’re bored out of their minds. To combat this, they….decide to wage war on the neighbouring girls dorm by scaring them, sneaking in, and trying to spy on them changing. Er… ok? The girls get fed up and wage war back. Cue shenanigans, dirty jokes, and obviously some couples getting together.

You can find it on My Drama List here

Trailer:

The second is called Ace of Sales, and brings Bianca Bai and Lin Mei Xun (everyone’s favourite TW drama mom) back together. It focuses on the fight between two main characters to become the top selling consultant on the TV shopping network. It appears as though they go way back to supermarket try outs, and from the trailer it’s apparent that one has brains, the other has beauty.

What do you guys think? Anything worth checking out?

It Started With a Kiss…TW Remake?

I guess the TW dramaland folks have decided a decade is enough time to remake It Started With a Kiss, fondly known by its fans as ISWAK. The original aired in 2005, which I still can’t believe was 11 years ago..until I see the fashions and filming quality from back then haha. I made a post previously about ISWAK and it’s many remakes (K-drama, J-drama), and now it’s getting a revamp back in its native country. Err..sort of native country, since to be fair it was inspired by a Japanese manga.  Continue reading “It Started With a Kiss…TW Remake?”

We open to see Cun Xi looking at old family photos on him phone. He decides to try and meet with Xin Yi one more time under the guise of her mysterious benefactor, and promises to leave Shanghai after that.

At work, Xin Yi is very happy about finally getting to meet her mystery buyer, and agrees to a tarot card reading by her co-worker. She asks the cards whether or not she will successfully meet the buyer, and ends up pulling out…the devil card. Her co-worker is quick to say that the card isn’t bad, and suggests that there are mysterious forces pulling them together – fated together.

Cun Xi arrives early at the meeting place, and happens across and old woman selling flowers. She gifts him with navelwort, which symbolizes courage. He laments the fact that he doesn’t know how Xin Yi will react to seeing him, and that even if he wants to offer an apology she won’t hear him out. When Xin Yi shows up, the old lady hands her the navelwort and a card from “Z”, apologizing for missing her again. Xin Yi tries to look nearby for her mystery buyer, and recognizes a man’s back as the same back of the stalker from the club. She yells at him to stop following her…and lo and behold it’s Cun Xi. How did you not recognize his face before then??

As the two stand looking at each other, a car races towards Xin Yi. She wakes up in the hospital, and Cun Xi is arguing with the nurse for further care for her. He’s adorably worried, and she yells at him to go away. Cun Xi pretty much bullies his way into escorting her home, and carries her shouting up the stairs to her apartment. A neighbor looks on in terror as they walk past, and hurries off.

Inside the apartment, Cun Xi notices that Xin Yi doesn’t have anything from her past in her new apartment, and asks if she’s dating Dylan. When she tells him to leave, he sits down on a couch and starts updating her on Jiang Mu Dao and its inhabitants. THere’s a moment where Xin Yi forgets herself and scoots closer to him, and she icily covers it up and orders him to go. He asks to say his piece, and she moves to push him out.

Xin Yi ends up tripping as a result of her foot injury, and Cun Xi falls with her in his attempt to catch her. In this position, he softly, ever so softly, starts to tell her his true feelings. When he leans forward for a kiss, the neighbor bursts in with a cop. Cun Xi tries to explain that it was all a misunderstanding, but when the officer asks Xin Yi to elaborate, she lies and says that she doesn’t know Xin Yi to get him out. Ouch >_<

Dylan ends up bailing Cun Xi out of jail (where, incidentally, Cun Xi had the revelation that he and Xin Yi are technically still married because they never fully completed the divorce papers). The two start fighting, only to be broken up by Xin Yi. She acts caring toward Dylan in front of Xin Yi, and tells Cun Xi that whatever he has to say can be said in front of Dylan as well. Cun Xi tells Xin Yi that he’s seen her wish box, and that he was going to ask her to stay two years ago because he loves her. Xin Yi tells him he never treated her right – wanting to the abort the baby wasn’t treating her right.

Xin Yi: “I want us to be strangers. If you truly want to treat me right, stay away from me. Now that your work in Shanghai is over, you should go back to Taiwan, where the one you love is. Take it as my request for you to leave my life.”

Cun Xi: “Alright, since you have asked me to treat you right and leave, then I should respect you. Press on, Chen Xin Yi.”

With those last words, flashbacks flicker through Xin Yi’s head, memories of when Cun Xi had encouraged her and supported her, always saying “Press on, Chen Xin Yi.”

Back at Xin Yi’s apartment, Dylan attempts some cuddling, and formally requests that Xin Yi be his girlfriend. He pulls her in a hug, but she doesn’t look too happy because her thoughts are preoccupied with someone else.

Xin Yi happens to see navelwort in another flower store, and decides to sent a pot of it to Xin Yi with a message of encouragement under “Z”.

Dylan and Xin Yi are out on a squash date the next day (the sport, not the gourd), and Dylan invites her to Paris with him for a few days. When Xin Yi awkwardly kisses him on the cheek in thanks, he tries to plant one on her. Luckily for her, a call from the Master interrupts them, summoning her back.

It turns out the Master is very familiar with Cun Xi’s grandmother, and has agreed to work with Cun Xi to make a special edition soap container for Inheritance. Xin Yi tries to sabotage the plan (quite rudely) but telling the master he is completely booked, til the end of time. The master doesn’t mind, and offers up Xin Yi as his replacement. HAHAHAHA. Xin Yi isn’t happy with the idea, and chases after Cun Xi to ask why he reneged on his promise to treat her as a stranger and leave her alone. Cun Xi responds by asking if “Miss Elaine” can’t separate her professional relationships from her personal ones, and says he will treat her like a stranger.

End.

Comments:

I can’t wait for the miscommunication to be cleared up! This episode was mainly re-acquainting our two leads after two years, and setting up their connection to allow them time to be around each other. The next few episodes should show quite a bit of character development!

18. Your least favorite female character.

Oh man. Oh man. I have so many of these. I’m just going to the first ones that come to mind because the list would be too long. Sha Zhi from MARS wouldn’t stop acting fake cute (like an annoying yappy chihuahua), but petulantly tried to get Chen Ling back to her, even when she saw how happy he finally was. Guang Xiao Fei from Absolute Boyfriend bugged me because she was so 2D for a main character. LKSDJFL:KSDJF. Pan Da Yang from Panda and Hedgehog started off so well, but became an annoying whiny character who was moody and got in the way of the bromance. Anna from Fated to Love You crossed the line when she gave Xin Yi (the lead girl) abortion papers “supposedly” from Cun Xi (the birth father) when he wanted nothing else than to keep the baby and stay married to Xin Yi. Ugh.

Greengrassjelly:

My least favorite female character is Ding Hui Fan from Down With Love, played by Chen Zi Han. She was a selfish actress who wanted fame and was unwilling to get married to her long-time boyfriend (played by Jerry), but then played dirty tricks to get him back when she realized he was falling for someone else (Ella). She even used the man who loved her (played by Michael Zhang) to get what she wanted, even if that mean asking Michael’s character to date Ella’s character. Ugh, so not okay!
